What is an uchiwa?
Japan’s fan culture, in 60 seconds.
The uchiwa is Japan’s traditional flat round fan — a familiar companion of Japanese summers for centuries, from festival nights to fireworks.
At Japanese idol concerts, fans turned the uchiwa into something new: a decorated cheering fan with huge glittering letters — your fave’s name, or messages like “Peace sign, please!” — held up in hopes of a wave back from the stage. It became an icon of Japanese fan culture.
We handcraft that same authentic item in Okayama, Japan, with your fave’s name in any language — for concerts, fan meetings, video calls, or simply to display at home as a piece of Japanese pop culture.
9 ways to use an uchiwa — with the why
Cheering fans aren’t just for concerts. Here is how Japan uses them — story first, benefits included.
Fell for Mt. Fuji, a castle town, late-night ramen — or a Japanese word? Put the places you visited, the food you loved, or your favorite word (侍 “samurai”, 絆 “kizuna — bonds”, ありがとう “thank you”) on a handmade fan, outlined-lettering style. A one-of-a-kind souvenir to display back home.
💡 Our pick: your favorite Japanese word in kanji, with a small note of its meaning
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- A souvenir no gift shop sells
- Your favorite word, made tangible
- Hangs beautifully on a wall back home
The morning of a big exam, at the front door. Words like “good luck” can feel awkward out loud — so hand over a fan that says it in sakura letters, the Japanese way.
💡 Our pick: Cherry-blossom motif with a lucky-charm vibe
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Says what’s hard to say out loud
- A beacon when meeting up in crowds
- Becomes a keepsake charm after they pass
After the festival, on the walk home. When your voice won’t come out — flip the fan around: “I’ve always liked you.” A classic two-sided design: an ordinary front, your real feelings on the back.
💡 Our pick: Two-sided build — casual front, your true message on the back
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- The fan speaks when you can’t
- Becomes a once-in-a-lifetime keepsake
- Whatever the answer, your courage shows
The last summer tournament. From the stands, a fan with their jersey number and “One more!”. Cheers get lost in the noise — big glittering letters reach the court.
💡 Our pick: Team colors × jersey number × name. Matching sets welcome
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Reaches them even when voices can’t
- Unites the whole cheering section
- A treasure next to the team photo after retirement
Piano, ballet, brass band. In halls where you must stay silent, raise a “Bravo!” fan the moment the curtain falls — and it stars in the after-show photos with the bouquet.
💡 Our pick: Elegant floral motif with their name; calm colors for formal halls
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Cheers without making a sound
- A photo prop as lovely as the flowers
- Hand it over beforehand as a nerve-calming charm
Instead of hunting for your kid among identical gym uniforms — let them find YOU. Raise a big “Go ___!” fan and you’ll lock eyes during the opening parade.
💡 Our pick: Big friendly letters × their favorite color or an original illustration
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Your child spots the family instantly
- A landmark for video-camera positioning
- Name-based, so it works every year
As the newlyweds walk in, every guest raises “Congrats!” at once. During the photo rounds it becomes the prop everyone reaches for.
💡 Our pick: Wedding theme colors × Congratulations. Matching sets for all guests
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Every photo turns festive
- The room becomes one, no rehearsal needed
- A keepsake for the couple’s new home
The arrivals gate, a hospital discharge, a platform farewell. “Welcome home” and “Safe travels” land straightest in big sparkling letters.
💡 Our pick: From elegant white & gold to a fan that makes them laugh
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Spotted instantly in any crowd
- The reunion photo becomes the best one
- Goes straight on the wall afterwards
A 60th birthday, a golden anniversary. The moment the cake appears, the whole family raises “Omedeto!” together — the video gets so much better.
💡 Our pick: Red & gold for milestone birthdays, with the guest of honor’s name
✨ WHY IT WORKS
- Minimal prep, maximum effect
- Their name makes it feel made-for-them
- Display it at home after the party

Ordering from abroad — every worry, answered
First time buying from a small Japanese shop? Fair. Here is everything, upfront.
Is this shop real?
Yes — we are SUNSUN SRM Co., Ltd., a registered Japanese company in Okayama, Japan (founded 2026). We also run a nail brand with 50+ published real works and are opening a salon in Fukuoka in 2027. Our company page and legal disclosure (Japanese) are public.
Is paying by card safe?
Yes. You pay on Stripe’s secure checkout page — the same payment platform used by millions of businesses worldwide. Your card number never reaches us.
When do I pay?
Only after you’ve seen the full quote AND approved the design proof. Until then, everything is free and you can simply walk away.
How much is shipping?
Actual Japan Post cost to your country — no markup, no handling fee. We state it in your quote so you decide after seeing the total.
How long until it arrives?
It depends on your country and the design, so we put the exact crafting + shipping schedule in your quote. If you have an event date, tell us first — we plan backwards from it.
What about customs/import tax?
If your country charges import duties, those are paid by the buyer (rules differ per country). We say this before you pay — no surprise at the door.
Can I cancel?
Free cancellation any time before crafting starts. Once we start cutting, we can’t cancel — your fan is made only for you. All sales are final: no returns or exchanges for change of mind (that’s exactly why we always confirm the design proof first). Defects caused by our crafting or packing are remade at our cost, as stated below.
What if it arrives damaged?
Email us photos within 7 days of arrival. If it’s due to our crafting or packing, we remake it at our cost. For damage in transit, we’ll help you through Japan Post’s damage claim.
Tell us about your fave!
A name, a color, a fuzzy idea — that's enough to start. We'll sketch, quote, and craft it with care.
